Invisalign® Advantages and Disadvantages Versus Braces

If you live in Dallas and are considering seeing a dentist about Invisalign®, you need to know the advantages and disadvantages of Invisalign®. Being designed especially for adults and teenagers who don't wish the embarrassment of wearing metal braces, Invisalign® is nearly invisible. Invisalign® is also creating quite a stir in the world of cosmetic dentistry and orthodontic patients.

The heart of the Invisalign® system is creation of custom-fitted aligners based on a 3-D computer simulation. These aligners will bring your teeth into the desired position over a period of 3 to 15 months. If you are playing with the idea of getting Invisalign® for yourself, here are some pros and cons which you can give some thought.

Advantages:

  1. Invisalign® aligners are removable while rubber band or metal contraptions which work behind traditional braces are not. However, you only remove them to brush your teeth or eat.
  2. Invisalign® is quite convenient since you do not have to worry about breaking brackets or rubber bands.
  3. If you are not so comfortable with visits to the dentist, Invisalign® is probably a better option as you don't have to visit so frequently. Invisalign® will limit your visits to our office to once in every six weeks or so after we're sure you're compliant.
  4. Just as the name implies, these aligners are of a transparent color making them nearly invisible! Hence you don't have to be worried or embarrassed about smiling. Smile to your heart's content with Invisalign®!

Disadvantages:

  1. These aligners might not be too pleasant to wear during the first few days, especially if you have sensitive teeth or gums. However, the discomfort will probably be only very temporary, as once you have adjusted to the aligners, you won't even know you are wearing them!
  2. Severe teeth grinders might grind through the aligners or even break them.
  3. Removing the aligners very frequently makes it more likely they'll get damaged or broken. Invisalign® is made of durable plastic so both these situations might occur only if you push the aligners to the extreme with bad oral habits.
  4. When compared to typical metal braces, Invisalign® is a tad bit on the more expensive side. In some countries, the entire treatment can cost up to $9000 (we're significantly less), although for teens and occasionally adults your insurance provider might make a contribution. For patients who realize that there is more to Invisalign® than simply the cost, we have excellent third party financing available.

Invisalign Metal Braces

Removal During Treatment Yes No. You cannot remove braces until treatment is completed
Treatment doesn't involve metal that can irritate teeth and gums Yes No. The metal wires and brackets used with braces can cause mouth irritation
