"Liberty lies in the hearts of men and women; when it dies there, no constitution, no law, no court can save it."--Judge Learned Hand
Dear Friends,
Summer is in full swing, the kids are out of school, you're wishing you were a kid out of school, and it's time for your monthly dose of stimulating facts and factoids from your favorite dental office!
I thought that July would be a great month to do a little research on Independence Day. Oddly enough, there's not a lot on info on Independence Day as it's generally just called the "Fourth of July" now.
Anyway, as you know fireworks are a huge part of our celebrations on the fourth so I was curious as to where they came from. Now you're curious too, right?
Most of us know that fireworks were first used in China but there's a little more to it than that. The very first fireworks were actually just green bamboo that was thrown onto bonfires to scare away evil spirits, known as "pas chuk." After a Chinese alchemist accidentally discovered gun powder, someone got the brilliant idea of placing gunpowder into the stalks of green bamboo and then throwing them into the fire. Viola - the first firecracker was born!
So there you have it, another answer to a burning question!
Now it's time for me to supply some questions and for you to supply the answers.
It's my first (and probably last) annual. . .
"Independence Day Quiz!"
Of course you know the major event that happened on Independence Day so I've dug deep to find questions about some other notable events that have happened on the 4th of July.
Question #1: In 1776, John Adams wrote to his wife Abigail that the fourth day of July 1776 ".
. . will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will
be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated
as the day of deliverance. . . from this time forward, forevermore."
o True
o False
Question #2: On the 4th of July 1826, these two former presidents died within a few hours of each other - who were they?
o John Quincy Adams &Thomas Jefferson
o Thomas Jefferson & James Madison
o John Adams & Thomas Jefferson
o George Washington & John Adams
Question #3: On the 4th of July 1862, (yep, that same date), this noted American was born. Who was he?
o Stephen Foster
o Robert E. Lee
o Edgar Allen Poe
o Matthew Brady
Question #4: Which of these patriotic songs was first performed on July 4th, 1832?
o The Star Spangled Banner
o America the Beautiful

o Warren G. Harding

Question #8: This celebrated American composer adamantly claimed to have been born on the 4th of July. His baptismal
records show that he was born one day earlier. Who was he?
o Irving Berlin
o Woody Guthrie
o John Phillip Sousa
o George M. Cohan
Question #9: The current U.S. flag was adopted on July 4th, 1960, following the admission of which state?
o Alaska
o Hawaii
o New Mexico
o South Dakota
Question #10: Which of these famous set of twins were born on the 4th of July?
o Elvis & Jesse Presley
o Robin & Maurice Gibbs
o Anne Landers & Abigail Van Buren
o Mary Kate & Ashley Olsen
And Now. . . The Answers
Question #1: The answer is false, the quote is from Adams but he was speaking of July 2nd, not the fourth (sorry, kind of trick question there).
Question #2: John Adams & Thomas Jefferson
Question #3: Stephen Foster (In case you're not familiar with Mr. Foster, he wrote: "Beautiful Dreamer", "Jeannie With the Light Brown", "Camptown Races" and "Oh, Susannah" among other songs.)
Question #4: America (My country Tis of Thee). Apparently Dr. Samuel Francis Smith wrote it on a scrap of paper in about half an hour. . . that's why it's sung to the tune of God Save the Queen.
Question #5: The Washington Monument. Work on the monument was finally completed in 1885. It's architect Robert Mills didn't live to see it completed. An interesting side note on the monument is that the 897 stone steps in it are made of stones from every state in the Union, along with stones donated by foreign countries and Native American nations.
Question 6: The Nat Turner Rebellion. The rebellion actually occurred on August 21st 1831 and many people credit it with opening the nation' eyes to the dehumanization caused by slavery.
Question #7: Calvin Coolidge

Question #10: Anne Landers & Abigail Van Buren. Their real names are Esther Pauline Friedman and Pauline Esther Friedman, respectively, and they were born in 1918.
So, how did you do? Don't feel bad if you didn't get too many right. . . I didn't either!
Hopefully you had fun with the quiz and you learned a thing or two!
I hope everyone has a great month and that you all enjoyed your Independence Day holiday!

You may have heard of Saint Patrick, patron saint of Ireland, or Saint Valentine, patron saint of lovers. But did you know there was a patron saint of dentistry?
All about Apollonia>When I spoke with Sarah for the first time a few months ago she was a bit frantic. Her wedding was fast approaching and she wanted to look her best. She had already lost weight, gotten a nice tan, had her hair styled. . . you know, the whole nine yards. The last thing left was to take care of her smile. There was just one problem. . . she was afraid of coming to see me.
She'd had braces in the past and all she could think about was her past painful experiences with dentistry. She was very anxious about the amount of pain she would experience and she wasn't sure that there was time to get what she wanted done.
We spent some time together talking about her concerns and I showed her step by step what we could do for her and how long it would take. And I explained the options available that would significantly reduce if not eliminate any potential pain.
She recently sent me a note thanking me and my team for getting her smile ready for her wedding. She told me that her new smile has given her great confidence. She never used to show her teeth when she smiled and now she's smiling wide all the time! Her friends and family tell her that she looks like a movie star and the best part is that she feels like one!
And as an added bonus she's not afraid of the dentist anymore, because she learned first hand that dentistry doesn't have to be painful. . . which is always great to hear.
If you or anyone you know is anything like Sarah - perhaps a little embarrassed to smile and/or afraid to go to the dentist - please let them know about Sarah's story. We love helping people gain confidence and feel like movie stars!
