Whether you have lost some or all of your teeth, there is a denture for you. If you think you may benefit from full or partial dentures, contact a general dentist. Meeting with a dentist will help you narrow down the right custom denture for your mouth so you can enjoy the many benefits dentures have to offer. From improved appearance to chewing efficiency, a custom-made denture can be life-changing.
Whether you opt for full or partial upper or lower dentures, they will most likely be fabricated from plastic resin and fitted over your alveolar ridge. The teeth embedded in your custom denture will also be sized and color-matched to match your former teeth or any existing teeth. Upper dentures often rely on a suctioning effect on the roof of your mouth to stay in place. Bottom dentures may have to be secured in place with clasps.
Depending on a patient’s oral health, a general dentist will either recommend upper dentures, lower dentures or both. No matter what type of denture is recommended, a patient will leave a dentist’s office with a custom-made denture that fits over their jawbone and gums. Custom upper dentures are more stable because it is easier to get a good suction along the roof of a patient’s mouth. Compared to custom lower dentures, upper dentures are also easier to adjust to and better-fitting.
Lower dentures, on the other hand, are made to replace all or some of a patient’s missing lower teeth. Because the tongue is in the way, lower dentures do not benefit from the same suction effect that upper dentures do. Instead, lower dentures rely on implants or clasps to keep them from shifting around. When dentures shift around, it could impact a person’s ability to chew or speak properly.
When a patient in need of dentures visits with a general dentist, the first thing to be determined is the type of denture a patient will get. From there, impressions or molds are taken of either the top jaw, lower jaw or both. Those impressions are then sent to a dental lab technician who works with a general dentist to fabricate a set of dentures that look and feel like natural teeth. When the fabrication process is complete, the denture will be fitted in the wearer’s mouth to ensure it fits well. If adjustments are needed, they will be made before a patient heads home with their denture.
If you recently lost all or some of your teeth, do not panic. There are denture options available to help you restore your appearance and smile in no time at all. Custom-made upper and lower dentures allow patients to continue living a normal life. If you are unsure how to get started, contact a general dentist. After a consultation with your dentist, you will be able to choose the right option for you.
