When Do I Need A Dental Crown?

Porcelain Dental Crowns Restore Your Tooth’s Function without Compromising its Beauty

We need healthy teeth to eat and smile confidently. So, when one or more teeth are damaged, this can wreak havoc on everyday life. Unfortunately, a damaged tooth can’t heal itself. Porcelain crowns from Dallas Laser Dentistry are an excellent solution for teeth. Whether you have pronounced tooth decay, damage, or a previously failed restoration, dental crowns placed by Drs. Mary Swift and Morgan Petty can give your tooth a new lease of life. If you’re seeking a dentist for crown replacement in Dallas, Texas, our team can help.

Why your smile may need a dental crown?

Dental crowns are the actual definition of “heavyweights” in dentistry. Also referred to as dental caps, dental crowns may be fingernail-sized, but they have numerous uses in dentistry. We may recommend a dental crown to:

While dental crowns can be created from several materials, ours placed where they are visible when you smile are made from porcelain. We love porcelain because of its unrivaled aesthetics. Designed with a striking resemblance to natural enamel, porcelain crowns deliver life-like results. When placed in your mouth, a dental crown looks and functions like your natural teeth, if not better.

Dental crowns treatment: three simple steps to a restored smile

Porcelain crowns in our office are replaced in at least two dental appointments. Unless it’s a dental emergency (we may alter the below steps), the typical dental crown procedure involves the simple steps below:

The first visit

This visit aims to examine your tooth to determine whether a dental crown is the best treatment. We’ll use dental X-rays to assess the extent of decay or damage. If the damage has reached the tooth’s pulp, we’ll recommend a root canal to make the condition safe for a crown. If not, we’ll remove the decayed portion and reshape it to create room for a crown. We make this process virtually pain-free by precisely numbing your gums with local anesthesia.

After tooth preparation, we take 3D digital impressions of the prepped tooth, the surrounding structures, and your bite. These impressions will be sent to our partner lab to create your custom crown. Until your new crown is ready for placement, we’ll protect your prepared tooth by placing a temporary crown.

The second visit

When we receive your crown, we’ll call you for the official “coronation” of your tooth. Don’t delay coming because your provisional crown isn’t made for durability. After inspecting the look and fit of your crown, we’ll use strong dental cement to bond your permanent crown to your tooth.

Step three is all yours

After placing your crown, you can show the world your new, beautiful smile. Your decayed or unattractive tooth will disappear to reveal a stunning smile. You’ll also eat and smile without pain or embarrassment. We’re confident you’ll love your restored smile.

Taking care of your crowned smile is easy—brush and floss diligently. Also, wear a mouthguard if you grind your teeth or play contact sports. Lastly, don’t forget to schedule bi-annual dental exam and cleaning appointments.
