Because the tongue is in the way, lower dentures do not benefit from the same suction effect that upper dentures do. Instead, lower dentures rely on implants or clasps to keep them from shifting around. When dentures shift around, it could impact a person’s ability to chew or speak properly.

How are custom dentures made?

When a patient in need of dentures visits with a general dentist, the first thing to be determined is the type of denture a patient will get. From there, impressions or molds are taken of either the top jaw, lower jaw or both. Those impressions are then sent to a dental lab technician who works with a general dentist to fabricate a set of dentures that look and feel like natural teeth. When the fabrication process is complete, the denture will be fitted in the wearer’s mouth to ensure it fits well. If adjustments are needed, they will be made before a patient heads home with their denture.
